4 – 5 November 2013 Kathmandu

Kathmandu has been celebrating the festival of the Hindu God of fortune Laxmi for the last 2 days. The streets and shops are heavily decorated with flags, flowers and lights and sand or grain images of Luxmi are on display everywhere. Truck loads of youths and motorcyclists gridlocked the streets today and we had to carry our bags for about half a kilometre out of town to catch our bus to the airport. While we were at the airport hundreds of UN soldiers arrived by plane to oversee national elections on 19 November. We will be watching with interest from Australia to see if Nepal is finally able to arrive at stable government after many years without any decisive government.

3 November 2013 Lukla to Kathmandu

We finally made it to Kathmandu a few hours ago in a 1980s ex-Russian military helicopter. It was extremely noisy and vibrated a lot and there were times when we wondered if it would make it. We are staying in the tourist area of Kathmandu in a nice up market hotel for our final night in Nepal after slumming it for the last 2 weeks. We have a farewell dinner to go to tonight and a bit of final shopping before we leave for the airport early tomorrow afternoon to return to Oz. It has been one hell of a physical workout and we are both lighter for the experience which is a welcome bonus. Even though we have enjoyed the wonderful scenery, challenges and the wonderful people we have met it will be nice to get home.

1-2 November 2013 Lukla

We are now back in Lukla and have been here for 2 days waiting for a plane to take us back to Kathmandu. The weather has been overcast for nearly a week now and only the odd plane has been able to get in. Accommodation in Lukla is now booked out and many people are desperate to get out as they cannot find accommodation or they have overseas airline bookings in the next day or so. We are hoping for a helicopter flight this afternoon at great expense as we are equally keen to get out of here as we would prefer to be in Kathmandu than here and we need to be in Kathmandu by 4 November to fly back to Sydney.
